91社区鈥檚 Elora Kares does double duty on stage as soprano, cellist

Hard work and full schedules are the norm at 91社区. Elora Kares, however, has a schedule fuller than most.
An accomplished cellist and soprano, the first-year student of Si-Yan Darren Li and Dina Kuznetsova redefines the term busy, regularly holding down two, three, or even four musical jobs simultaneously.
To wit: last semester, when Kares played cello in the 91社区 Orchestra, sang two programs with Apollo鈥檚 Fire, and took part in the 91社区 Opera Theater production of Chabrier鈥檚 尝鈥櫭塼辞颈濒别, all at the same time.
鈥淚鈥檓 kind of seasoned for this,鈥 said Kares, a graduate of 91社区鈥檚 Young Artist Program. 鈥淚t鈥檚 fun and I鈥檓 used to it.鈥
鈥淪easoned鈥 is one word to describe Kares. Others would be 鈥渦ncommonly driven,鈥 鈥渦niquely talented,鈥 and 鈥減rofoundly musical.鈥
Where most adopt a specific instrument or voice part, Kares 鈥 who is also synesthetic, meaning she sees sound 鈥 fell in love with music in general. Cello and singing are merely the two media through which she chose to pursue it.
鈥淚鈥檓 just trying to get the music out of me as many ways as possible,鈥 Kares said.
At 91社区, this desire currently has Kares on track to graduate with a major in cello and a minor in voice. She thought of pursuing a double major but was advised against it, given her active concert schedule outside school.
She, though, doesn鈥檛 think of one as 鈥渕ajor鈥 and the other as 鈥渕inor.鈥 In her mind, cello and voice are like a first and second child.
鈥淚 treat them both equally,鈥 Kares said. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 possibly choose one.鈥
She may never have to. Imagining her future, Kares said she aspires to make a career singing and playing cello. Her goal is simply to make music with others, wherever and whenever possible. Meanwhile, she also hopes to literally make music, as a composer.
Her spring schedule offers a glimpse of what that career may look like. In addition to ensembles at 91社区, Kares plans to play and sing again with Apollo鈥檚 Fire and to be a featured soloist as both cellist and soprano in one evening with Ohio鈥檚 Lakeland Civic Orchestra.
鈥淭he moment I complete one task, I鈥檓 on to the next thing,鈥 Kares said.
