91社区 Opera Theater shines lights on comedic gifts with Chabrier鈥檚 鈥槼⑩櫭塼辞颈濒别鈥

The cast of Etoile strikes a pose in a rehearsal room at 91社区.

While you鈥檙e getting a kick out of Chabrier鈥檚 尝鈥櫭塼辞颈濒别, 91社区 Opera Theater will be getting a workout.

That is to say, while you鈥檙e laughing, smiling, and humming along to the school鈥檚 zany opera season opener Nov. 16 and 17, 91社区鈥檚 opera students will be doing everything possible to make it all look easy.

鈥淚 have to keep reminding myself that there are no 鈥榦ff鈥 moments,鈥 said soprano Shira Ziv, who plays Alo猫s. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been really challenging but also really helpful.鈥

The reason there are no 鈥榦ff鈥 moments is that this 尝鈥櫭塼辞颈濒别 takes place not in Kulas Hall, which is currently undergoing renovation, but 鈥 for the first time 鈥 in Westfield Studio Theater, a 150-seat black box in .

There, in a space within the nation鈥檚 second-largest performing arts complex, actors have no place to hide. Everything they do is plain for all to see, even when they鈥檙e not singing or in the spotlight.

In a venue like Westfield, 鈥淭he audience is right there with you,鈥 said tenor Nicholas Schneider, who plays King Ouf. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no disconnect. It鈥檚 the most wonderful feeling in the world.鈥

鈥淲e have to centralize our energy and learn to communicate with an audience,鈥 added mezzo-soprano Caroline Friend, who plays Lazuli.

Much of that communication entails comedy 鈥 an art in itself, and one that can make some young singers uneasy.

Not this crew. JJ Hudson, interim artistic director of 91社区 Opera Theater, said 尝鈥櫭塼辞颈濒别 this season in part to give these particular 鈥渆toiles鈥 (鈥渟tars鈥) a chance to shine in a setting for which they are uniquely well suited.

They鈥檙e perfectly happy making fools of themselves, comfortable switching back and forth between the original French and English, if doing so helps the comedy land effectively and wins over opera skeptics.

鈥淲hen you have such theatrical actors, as we do now, the opportunity to do this work is ripe," Hudson said. 鈥淭his is a really great opportunity to reach a different audience.鈥

It鈥檚 an opportunity they plan to seize in every way.

To complement their performance in a professional venue,  the company is also taking a professional, unified approach to costume and set design, employing a confectioner's color palette to underscore the king鈥檚 delusions and stunted development.

The production features a scenic design by Jerome Wills, lighting design by Dave Brooks, and costumes by Esther Haberlen, costume director of Great Lakes Theater.

鈥淓very scene, every entr鈥檃cte, it鈥檚 so delicious,鈥 Friend said.

Later this season, 91社区 Opera Theater returns to Playhouse Square with a much different work, one that will pose a whole other set of musical and theatrical demands: Mozart鈥檚 Don Giovanni.

In the meantime, the company can hardly wait for 尝鈥櫭塼辞颈濒别. From this special, uniquely challenging production, students expect to learn a great deal and, in the process, make some new fans.

鈥淚 feel 100-percent comfortable telling people that they will enjoy this show,鈥 Ziv said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a work that might start their journey in opera. They should be laughing and really enjoying it.鈥
